Unlike some cities (e.g. you might - although you shouldn't - need a little persuading about why you should visit Las Vegas) I can't think of anyone who wouldn't want to visit San Francisco sometime during their lives. But for anyone still not convinced, here's a quick overview of what to expect!

Well, there's so much worthy of mention, I'm not sure where to start! Above is one of many pictures on this site of arguably one of the most famous sights in the world - the Golden Gate Bridge. It really is a stunning construction - especially when you get close up. But this is far from being a one attraction town. It's the sort of city where you just want to walk, because every time you reach the top of a hill (and there are loads of them - and some are really steep!) you'll get another 'kodak-moment' as you get another stunning view of Alcatraz, the Oakland Bay Bridge, Coit Tower or the Transamerica Pyramid to name but four!

But it's not simply a place with some really impressive buildings. There's the whole atmosphere of the place that is unlike any other US city - Cable Cars rattling around, the fog rolling in off the Pacific ocean, the sounds of the sea-lions at Pier 39. To me San Francisco feels like the most European of US Cities (excepting maybe Boston which goes one further in having streets with bends in them!). It's not something easily defineable, maybe something about the hills, maybe something about the weather but either way you just want to soak it all in!

San Francisco has some very well defined neighbourhoods (sorry, I'm sticking with British spelling here!) including the largest Chinatown area outside of China itself which is a facinating place to go for dinner - or for shopping. If you are into sports then San Francisco has a couple of the most famous teams in the US - the 49ers American Football team who play at Monster Park and the Giants Baseball team who play at the fantastic AT&T Park right in the heart of the city.

So, if it's that great, is there anything that you need to avoid, or are there any reasons why you should avoid San Francisco altogther? Well, like any city there are certain less inviting areas - although San Francisco has fewer than most. Certain areas south of Market are not that great - although even these are being improved gradually. The streets to the south-west of Union square (including Market) get quite seedy - lots of adult bookstores and stuff, but even there you are unlikely to feel really threatened. Other than that, just use common sense - try not to look too like a tourist and you'll be fine!

So what about the Earthquakes? Well, you would be extremely unlucky to experience an earth tremor of any strength - although little ones hit the area all the time - usually too small to be noticed. Check out our Earthquake page for more info. And that's pretty much it - everything else is just there to be enjoyed!!
