For some reason - and this is really my opinion - finding a suitable hotel in San Francisco can leave you in a bit of a dilemma. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of places to stay, it's just that unlike most cities there are distinct clusters of hotels that seem to be targeting distinctly different groups of visitors
The business traveler in San Francisco is fairly well catered for, with a large number of suitable hotels in the Union Square area - which is conveniently close to the Financial District. The cream of the crop has to be the Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill, but in addition you'll find the usual upmarket chains are all present: Crowne Plaza; Grand Hyatt; Hilton & Towers; Westin St. Francis to name but four. Less expensive are the Holiday Inn's, Ramada's etc that you'll find in any city - where you should expect to pay between $70 and $100. If you are visiting San Francisco for pleasure you have a real dilemma - do you stay close to the main 'touristy' locations - such as Fishermans Wharf, Pier 39 + Ghirardelli Square - which are over-priced; stay in the luxury hotels (see above) for about the same cash, or stay in the mainly 3-star Union Square hotels for a reasonable rate. The downside with the Union Square bunch is the location - some of the streets around Union Sq. are somewhat seedy - and the closer to Market Street you get the worse they get - I doubt you would want to stay in a hotel placed next to a strip joint!
If you choose the hotels close to the Wharf you have a pretty good choice of the mass-market chains - Holiday Inn, Marriott, Radisson, Sheraton etc. all have hotels in this area. As I said earlier though, they all charge what would I would consider to be excessive given their facilities - expect to pay in the region of $150 a night here. By comparison, if you can stretch to $200 you can probably get a room at the wonderful Fairmont Hotel - on Nob Hill with fantastic views, right on both the California and Powell-Hyde/Mason Cable Car lines…….
Outside of these areas there is a small cluster of motel-type hotels on Van Ness - ideal if you have a car as they offer low-cost (or sometimes even free - a miracle in this city) parking. There are also a fair number of 'Bed & Breakfast' type hotels all over the city - offering the home-away-from-home atmosphere you certainly won't get at a large hotel1.
If you've got an early flight, or are just passing through San Francisco (shame on you - stay for a couple of days!!!) then there are the usual cluster of Motels in the airport vicinity - but be warned they do fill up quite quickly - as indeed does most of the accommodation in San Francisco.
Footnote: 1. For British readers, B&B's in the US are usually distinctly superior from their namesakes in the UK - generally offering quality accommodation, friendly service, and really really good breakfasts. They are often not, however, the cheapest of places to stay!
