monster park

Well, it may not be the most impressive stadium in America, but to me Monster Park represents something a little special. First opened in 1960 as Candlestick Park (named after it's location at Candlestick Point), it obtained Monster Cable as sponsors in 2004 and hence gained its current name.

I don't think I like this trend in naming stadia after their sponsors, but I suppose if the sponsor brings money to the party I shouldn't really complain. Still, lets just hope that no completely inappropriate sponsors get involved - can you imagine anything worse than a Sports Stadium named after a toilet tissue manufacturer?

If you like the picture above, try clicking on the following link - for the complete Monster Park Panorama. If you've got a slow connection - be warned - it's a large page!

Anyway, Monster Park is currently home to San Francisco's professional Football team, the San Francisco 49ers, and until October 1999 was also home to the Giants Baseball team. (The Giants moved in 2000 to a new purpose-built stadium - AT&T Park in downtown San Francisco)

Strangely, although Monster Park never felt quite right for Baseball it was in fact originally designed for the Giants - the grandstands initially consisted of just the areas behind first and third base (see above). Now that the Giants have left I wonder if there will be any modifications to make the Football seating areas more permanent?

Bay Area Sports
In addition to the Giants (shown here in their penultimate game at the then 3Com Park) and the 49ers, the Bay Area hosts a number of Professional sports teams:

In the East Bay the Oakland Raidersare the NFL's representatives, whilst the Oakland Athletics are the Major League Baseball side. On top of that Oakland also has it's own NBA team - the Golden State Warriors and San Jose has the SJ Sharks NHL hockey team!
