The Tropicana is rapidly becoming the oldest resort on the strip, as the resorts that it shared the strip with for many years - Dunes, Sands (now The Venetian), and then the Hacienda (now Mandalay Bay) have all been imploded to pave the way for larger, flasher, more dramatic resorts. Originally opened in 1957 it has been massively extrended to and improved over the years to eventually become one of Las Vegas' first fully themed resorts in 1986.
Indeed when I first visited Las Vegas in that year I stayed at the Tropicana and loved it's scale and south-seas theme - at that time the only other resort that could match it was Caesars Palace!!

The intervening years have seen the mega-resort become the norm in Las Vegas and the Tropicana gradually began to share the Las Vegas skyline with first the Mirage and then a whole raft of huge developments. In 1986 the Tropicana was all alone at the junction of Tropicana Avenue and 'The Strip'. Since then, Excalibur, MGM Grand and finally New York, New York have filled the other corners (not to mention the Monte Carlo and Luxor just up and down the strip) and have made the junction of Tropicana and Las Vegas boulevard one of the most stunning spots in the whole of Las Vegas!

Despite not being as modern as some The Tropicana is still a great place to stay, and has a laid back charm all of its own. Featuring just under 2,000 rooms - many of which have been recently refurbished - it is perhaps slightly smaller than the more recent properties, but that in itself adds to the appeal - just try checking into a hotel with twice as many rooms on a Friday night and you'll see the difference!!! The Tropicana also features one of the longest running shows in Las Vegas - the famous Folies Bergere - based on the Parisian cabaret shows of the early 20th century - featured of course in the award winning film Moulin Rouge. You can go for the scantily clad early show, or the barely clad (i.e. topless) later show - whatever takes your fancy!
There's a lot of industry speculation around the Tropicana at present (none of which we can confirm - but apparently you can't book a convention for after May 2004!) but it may be that the resort will soon be commencing on a major redevelopment, with talk of 1,570 new rooms, and potentially demolition of one of the original towers. Who knows what will happen, this is Vegas after all!
