Treasure Island is currently undergoing a fairly significant re-birth some ten years after its debut on the Las Vegas Strip. The original Pirate Battle - featuring the most elaborate, traffic-stopping, pyrotechnics on the strip - has been silenced to make way for the fully modernised, and sexed-up Sirens of TI - a "modern interpretation of the Battle of Buccaneer Bay" (to quote the press release!) which is set sail in 2003.
But the relaunch goes way beyond the Pirate Battle. Indeed even the name of the resort is getting a re-make - from Treasure Island to just TI as the younger sister of the Mirage seeks to acquire a yonger, cooler image, and presumably capture some of the revenue that younger, cooler visitors bring in!

This would appear to be a fairly risky venture for a resort with 2,891 rooms. Well, maybe not. TI treasureislandlasvegas.com is just one of the rather vast MGM Mirage group of resorts - which also includes Bellagio and MGM Grand so maybe they can afford to play with the theme a bit. I kind of hope they retain at least some of the theme that has made Treasure Island so unique to Las Vegas.
Anyway, the new Sirens of TI battle, whilst retaining the original ships, will feature scantily-clad lady pirates (hmm, not sure if female pirates could be considered 'ladies' but we'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now) rather than burly pirates, which will certainly raise the temperature of the crowd!!

At Treasure Island, the whole 'Pirate Cove' thing has been done to perfection both outside and inside. Outside you seem to walk through a seventeenth century port as you enter the casino. Inside the theme is maintained meticulously, really setting the standard to which all other themed hotels must reach. Quick restaurant hint: I definitely recommend the Buccaneer Bay Club - and in particular the Chocolate Soufflé. Located on the second floor at the front of the casino, overlooking the bay, you get a fantastic meal, and a wonderful view of the sea battle! Just remember to ask for that amazing soufflé!!
