The Stratosphere is really two locations in one. The first part - the Resort - has struggled to make a name for itself since opening in 1996 with half of it's hotel rooms lying in a half-completed state having gone bankrupt during the building process. Although finally being completed (an additional 1,002 rooms should be added by summer 2001) the resort still has some problems to deal with.

The first is the theme - basing a whole resort around the concept of an observation tower would seem to be a little weak. The second is the location, at the far north of the strip its closest neighbour is the Sahara and the rest are miles further south, surrounded by cheap pawn shops. Inside it's cheap and cheerful does it - which is to be expected given the price of the rooms, and although I have to criticise the ambiance you can't beat these sorts of resorts for value for money on things like buffets - and lunch in particular - and the better than normal odds offered on both slots and table games.

The second part is The Tower which offers the most incredible views of Las Vegas. It is the 'Tallest free-standing observation tower in the US'. Despite the ridiculousness of this phrase (what's wrong with 'one of the tallest structures in the US') the Stratosphere is very large indeed - 1,149 feet in fact - and the view from the top is outstanding.

What is more impressive (or should that be terrifying) though is riding on 'The Bigshot'. Here you sit strapped to the outside of the top 200 foot of the tower - looking out over Las Vegas from 1150 feet, and are then ejected at 4G upwards another 160 feet! In addition to that there's a kind of Roller Coaster (the 'High Roller') which winds its way round the outside of the top of the tower!!
