The Stardust originally opened in 1958, with some 500 motel-style rooms. The most recent hotel addition was in 1991 when the 32-story tower so prominent on the strip was constructed. Those original rooms survived another 8 years before finally being demolished towards the end of 1999. Because of the continual improvements the Stardust doesn't feel like a 40-something year old casino. What it does feel like is a sophisticated gamblers casino - no real theme, just luxurious pleasant hotel and casino areas.

I'm not sure if the lack of theme is something that the owners (Boyd Gaming) intended, or if they just missed the boat by a couple of years. At the time the new tower building was opened the onslaught of themed resorts hadn't quite started - although Mirage had opened in 1989 it wasn't really until 1993 (when Treasure Island, Luxor and MGM Grand opened) that it became critical that a new resort should have a very specific theme. Not having a theme doesn't hurt the Stardust, it just gives it a very different feel - one that the traditional gambler will probably like!
