The Riviera is one Casino in Las Vegas that I just don’t like. There are a number of ways that the older Casino's can be modernised - you can knock it all down and start again (Aladdin), you can add to it, modernise it, keep adding to it (Caesars Palace), or do nothing. The Riviera has in the past tried option 2 - and ended up with a huge, sprawling casino that feels messy, old, claustrophobic and confusing - as well as over 2,000 rooms in a number of towers that doubtlessly make getting to your room a somewhat tricky exercise - but in recent years has gone for option 3
One of my big criticisms of Caesars is the way the casino has grown into numerous small-ish areas, but at least they've tried to make it look nice. At the Riviera they really haven't. I guess the problem is that with 2,100 rooms you make a lot of money - particularly when so many of the holiday companies (particularly in the UK) use the Riviera as a chosen resort. So even though people might not really like the place they've probably already paid before they arrive! So the arguments that worked so well when pulling down the Sands, Hacienda or Aladdin don't work (small numbers of rooms equals small returns therefore pull it down and build a 3,000 room mega-resort), but I think eventually that will have to happen here……
