Palms is one of Las Vegas newest casino resorts - having only opened on November 15th 2001. Initially featuring just 447 rooms in a single 42 story tower Palms will eventually be expanded to 2,000 rooms - although this will probably have to wait until the economic climate improves! Palms is located just west of the Rio on Flamingo Road. Interestingly the tower at the Palms is exactly 1 story taller than that of its neighbour. I wonder if that was a deliberate decision?

Occupying the top two stories of the tower are what I hope to be a new trend in Las Vegas - a tower-top Restaurant (the Alizé) and Bar (the Ghost Bar) featuring 180° views and an open-air terrace! Rather bizarrely the Ghost Bar is located on the 55th floor - which seems a little odd in a 42 story tower! Let's hope that unlike some other sky-high venues in Las Vegas (think 'House-of-Blues Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay) they are open to the general public (well, at least those old enough to drink!)

Whilst other recent Casino's have gone for a very upmarket, old-world feel (Bellagio, Paris et al) Palms has opted for a much more modern feel. The styling has nods towards art deco, but the feel is very much trendy restaurant, with polished wood floors (even in the casino areas), curved walls and a very young feel. This doesn't feel like the sort of casino your gran would spend a couple of hours in, feeding quarters into a slot machine, but somewhere the local dinky's (dual-income no kids yet!) might come for a night out!

As far as I know, Palms grabbed a first for Las Vegas - none of the slots or video poker machines at Palms pay out coins at all - you get a ticket which you can either pay into another machine, or cash in at a cashier. This is great - it certainly beats getting your hands covered in coin-goo! Palms looks and feels great - it has a young, modern, vibrant feel, and is definitely worth checking out. I just wonder if the modern feel will work so well in 20 or so years time - just remember everyone thought that 60's feel looked great, until about the mid 80's when it just looked really tired………
