Uh oh! What has been started here? I'm surprised it took so long for someone to come up with the concept of using a whole city as a theme for a hotel! Now that it has it seems like everyone will be cashing in. With the opening of Venetian on the old Sands site, and Paris, next door to Ballys there are now three 'city' themed resorts.
You have to say though, that they've done a superb job on the New York, New York - on the outside at least. All of the major sites have been faithfully reproduced. The inside on the other hand is a bit of a disappointment, set out as New York streets at night with leafy cafes tucked beside the slots. It sort of works, but if you look up, instead of seeing clouds and sky a la Caesars Palace you just get a black painted ceiling. Despite that the atmosphere is just about right - particularly in the foot court area.

The official New York, New York website, www.nynyhotelcasino.com is as immaculately laid out as the casino itself. Pity if you've only got a regular modem link, you could be waiting for some time!
New York, New York was originally jointly owned by Primadonna Resorts and MGM Grand Inc. Clearly this joint ownership was a success, as MGM Grand bought Primadonna in November 1998!
Of course the big excitement at New York, New York is the roller coaster. This starts inside the Casino, runs completely round the outside and throws you upside down a couple of times for good measure. Again, it's a fun ride, but it isn't up to the level of, say, Montu at Busch Gardens in Florida.

Not content with one city-themed Casino, Mark Advent, the idea behind New York, New York, has already come up with an idea for a Casino based on San Francisco. I bet that took him a long time to think of! What's the logical next step?
I know, what about a casino based on London? You could have a replica Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, River Thames, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, the list is endless. You could even enlist the help (and considerable financial wealth) of Mohammed Al-Fayed and get a replica Harrods. Hey, that's not such a dumb idea. Anyone got $1 billion that they don't need? Just remember, I thought of it first!
