Built on part of the old Dunes casino and golf-course site, the Monte Carlo has the distinction of being jointly owned by two of the largest players in the Las Vegas casino arena. A collaboration between Mandalay Resort Group (they put up money) and Mirage Resorts (who gave the land and of course are now owned by the MGM group), Monte Carlo is one of the least pretentious of the new breed of mega-resort on the Strip, quietly going it's sophisticated way without any need for garish themes or displays of grandeur!

Monte Carlo is extremely classy - as is fitting for a Mirage casino, but is somewhat of a departure for Circus Circus, in that its theme serves only to set the scene for the gambling, rather than to define the resort. It does this extremely well, the atmosphere makes it feel as if it were a real Monte Carlo casino.

In a first for Las Vegas, Monte Carlo has its own micro-brewery - featuring some rather tasty brews - and some free entertainment as well! Other than that Monte Carlo feels distinctly low-key. The casino area (whilst wonderfully decorated) seems somewhat small compared with other recent resorts (i.e. Mandalay Bay) and there isn't any one particular feature that pulls you in.
With the opening of Bellagio Monte Carlo now has a direct mono-rail link to the 'northern' group of Casinos - Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Ballys etc. All the time the traffic on the strip is getting worse, it's actually getting better for the pedestrian!
