The Mirage was the first of Steve Wynn's Las Vegas Strip hotels - and where the whole mega-resort thing was kickstarted in 1989. After the Mirage Wynn added Treasure Island - as a sister resort, and then topped them both with the ultimate resort - Bellagio before selling out to the MGM Grand and buying the Desert Inn (which he then imploded in order to start work on the upcoming Wynn Las Vegas. The Mirage is yet another Las Vegas marvel. Aimed at the high end of the market, the interior of the Mirage is cool and sophisticated. There is an air of exclusivity here that is only matched by Ballys and maybe by Mandalay Bay (and only exceeded by Bellagio!)

Of course, the other thing that Mirage resorts do best is cause traffic chaos! The most impressive feature at the Mirage is not the casino or hotel, but the volcano that explodes onto Las Vegas Boulevard every night, bringing most traffic to a standstill. During the day it's simply an elaborate waterfall, but at night, via the use of cunning lighting and jets of fire, the water jets are made to look like molten lava pouring down the side of the volcano. You must see this if you are in Las Vegas (and then see the Pirate Ship at Treasure Island and the stunning Fountains at Bellagio!)

Linked to it's sister hotel, Treasure Island, by a free monorail service, The Mirage is one of my favourite hotels on the strip. It is hugely tacky in a Las Vegas way, and yet classy at the same time.
Even the official website - www.themirage.com is more sophisticated than the average website.
Inside the fun continues, with a huge shark tank creating the back wall to the check-in desk, the famous white tigers enclosure, previously seen in the famous Siegfried and Roy show, now unfortunately closed due to the mauling of Roy Horn by one of the tigers.

Outside, the pool area continues the theme, with a classic oasis feel - lush palm trees, waterfalls, and a thoroughly relaxed feel. The only thing that slightly spoils the hideaway location is the fact that unlike most resorts, anyone can get virtually to the poolside - and guests trying to reach the pool have to fight through throngs of gawping tourists! This is needed to enable visitors to get to the new Dolphin Habitat - featuring "Four connected pools, an artificial coral reef system, and a sandy bottom" - oh yes, and a family of bottle-nosed Dolphins!
