Well, there's only one word that really sums up the MGM Grand: Big. This place is really, really, really big. With 5,034 rooms, it's the largest hotel in the world - although there are some in Las Vegas that are close in size. In fact, Las Vegas has 13 of the 20 largest hotels in the world. Gosh!
When it initially opened the MGM really was too big - everything felt lost. However over time they have gradually replaced some of the original features and the place now has an appeal all of it's own. Of particular interest is the lion enclosure - featuring the MGM's own lions that started out as tiny cubs, and are just beginning to reach full size!

In addition to re-designing the layout of the casino the MGM has added more and more outside - including this rather fetching new luxury suite area. Still, despite looking great, this section just adds to the feeling that the MGM has abandoned it's theme, and just tried to position itself at the top-end of the market.
But that's OK, it leaves them free to re-design areas, such as the wonderful Studio-Back-Lot style restaurant and shopping complex, without needing to ensure that the resort theme is maintained.
Did you know? MGM is part of the biggest chain of resorts in the city. The MGM Mirage group now owns or operates some of the grandest (sorry, no pun intended) resorts in Las Vegas, including New York, New York, Mirage, Bellagio, Treasure Island and the Golden Nugget in downtown!

The Casino is huge, no I mean it, it really is massive! So much so that it feels wonderfully spacious - and I think you would be hard-pushed to not find space on the machine or table of your choice
Another notable thing about the MGM Grand is that, in conjunction with Ballys it introduced, in 1995, the original Monorail to link the two casinos. Actually, by the time you'd walked from the strip all the way through the MGM to the monorail, and then walked all the way through Bally's to the strip, you'd probably walked as far as if you'd stayed on the road. But the monorail was a huge success, moving 20,000 people per day, and has been used as the basis for a new Las Vegas monorail connecting the Sahara all the way to MGM. The link to Bally's is currently closed, but will re-open in 2004 as part of the much longer link. Now if that doesn't have a positive effect on Strip traffic, I don't know what will!
