Bally's is one of the more understated (if that's possible in Las Vegas) of the big strip hotels. Quietly sitting just over the road from Bellagio, it lacks the over-the-top explosions of the Mirage and Treasure Island, and probably benefits because of this.

It's also set quite a way back from the strip itself, and unlike Caesars Palace, which invites you in via a moving walkway, but then forces you out into the car park to walk back, Bally's moving walkway takes you into and back out of the casino.

Bally's really doesn't look like much during the day. In fact, having squeezed Paris in next door, I'm kind of surprised the Bally's/Paris owners didn't just implode the place and build a Paris that would have done the theme justice! Inside however, Bally's exudes a certain style that means that it works, despite having no expensive effects, or specific theme. I really can't help thinking though, that Bally's is one of the group of resorts that could probably benefit from a re-build sooner rather than later!

Getting around Las Vegas on foot is soon going to be so much easier. The original monorail between Ballys and the MGM Grand has closed. But don't worry, it will soon (sometime in 2004) be replaced by a much longer monorail, runinng all the way from the Sahara. Once this has opened you'll be able to get all the way from Mandalay Bay to Excalibur via their monorail, on over the footbridge to New York, New York, across the other bridge to the MGM Grand and on to Bally's and then all the way up to the Sahara without touching your feet on the 'ground'!

Mentioning the MGM Grand reminds me of an odd bit of trivia. When Bally's was opened in 1973 it was originally called the MGM Grand. It was renamed sometime after the fire of 1980. Crikey! Is anything what it seems in Las Vegas?
