Mandalay Bay (www.mandalaybay.com) is by far the most sophisticated of Mandalay Resort Group resorts, even before you count the separate 424 room Four Seasons that occupies the 35-39th floors of the hotel. Indeed they now have pretty much all price ranges covered - from the relatively low-end Excalibur through the middle-ground Luxor finishing up here.
Or have they? Whilst Mandalay Bay is undoubtedly massively luxurious, with a gorgeous casino area, and an amazing selection of probably the most interestingly different restaurants in Las Vegas, it happily doesn't quite get too pretentious in the way that Bellagio does. Somehow Mandalay Bay is relaxed money, whilst Bellagio makes you feel that you don't have enough - even when you do! On the other hand, I could be wrong - go and see for yourselves!

The restaurants really take Mandalay Bay on to a higher level. Yes, you can find the ubiquitous Buffet, and 24-hour Café, but then there's the China Grill - a fusion of Chinese and Western cuisine. If Vodka is your drink (and even if it isn't) don't miss Red Square which features a bar topped with solid ice - designed to keep your drinks cool - a statue of Lenin (minus head of course) and over 100 different Vodkas from all over the world. Next door is Rum Jungle - complete with a wall of fire and Brazilian style all-you-can-eat skewers - and then it turns into one of Las Vegas most impressive Nightclubs!!
And if that isn't enough to get the juices flowing, there's always Aureole which comes complete with a four-story tower wine-cellar and acrobatic wine-waiters! Then of course, there's the House of Blues which seems to have lined up some of the biggest rock acts in the world, not to mention the fact that it has a whole floor of rooms themed after it!

Outside, Mandalay Bay has provided a swimming area to rival Wet 'n Wild - with an 11-acre 'water environment' - complete with lazy river, sandy-beach (much of which seems to end up in the various pools!), and a wave-pool that is supposedly powerful enough to allow surfing competitions to take place - although it wasn't quite as rough as that when we were in it!
You could quite happily stay at Mandalay Bay and feel no need to gamble at all! Indeed maybe that is the only flaw in an otherwise perfect plan: most of the restaurants are out of the casino area, as are the front-desk, hotel elevators, pool-area (on its own 'Beach Level') etc. Do they not want you to gamble?!!
Mandalay Bay has just expanded, with the opening of the THEhotel at Mandalay Bay tower that has added a further 1,122 rooms to bring it's total to 4,825 - only marginally smaller than the largest in the world, just up the strip at the MGM Grand!

The rooms. If anything this is where Mandalay Bay scores its most sophisticated hit. Whilst the rest of the property is very in-your-face and (dare I say it) ever so slightly gaudy, the standard rooms are subtle, relaxing and beautifully appointed.
In a change from the 'standard' room layout, the bathroom is reached through two louvre-doors that are between the wardrobes. This has the effect that when the doors are closed, you just get a very pleasing row of white wooden doors. Then you get a huge arm-chair and foot-stool which together create a chaise-longue. Very, very nice indeed!!
