I think I can safely say that this is one of the most amazing buildings in the World. OK so the ancient Egyptians performed a far greater feat of engineering in building the original pyramids, but they were never like this! It really is architecture for the hell of it, and could only be found in Las Vegas!

Inside the pyramid, Luxor has the world's largest atrium - 30 stories high! This gives it a major advantage over most, if not all of its competitors. Whilst at, for example, the Tropicana, your room is reached down a long windowless corridor, at Luxor, each of the 2,500 hotel rooms in the main pyramid is reached by means of a corridor open on one side to the inside of the atrium, amazing!

Of course, like everything else in Las Vegas, nothing is quite what it seems. For example the sphinx's outside Luxor look like they are solid stone but are just made of a thin layer of concrete covering a wood frame!

All of the rooms at Luxor are very well appointed, and remarkably you don't have to pay much for it. One of those bizarre things about hotel rooms in general - and Las Vegas rooms (like everything else in Las Vegas) exaggerate the fact - is the published 'official room rates'. For a Luxor room the 'official rates' range from $200 to $200! I advise you not to pay anything like as much - unless it's New Years Eve!! With the ever increasing number of even more luxury resorts in Las Vegas, I would be surprised if you ever need to pay even $200 to stay at Luxor - in fact it is more likely to be closer to $100. Now that is value for money!!!

Above is a view from the rear of Luxor, showing the swimming pool area at the bottom. To the right the hotel is visible, another Las Vegas hotel consigned to history after a stunning implosion on New Year's Eve 1996, and having been totally erased from memory by the absolutely stunning Mandalay Bay.

Also clearly visible at the top of the pyramid is the clear glass xenon light, reportedly the brightest light on the planet! At night, when it is lit, it is visible from aircraft cruising over Los Angeles, some 300 miles away!

Since this photo was taken, the left side of the picture has changed dramatically as an extra 2000 rooms are added.

To get the full splendour of staying at Luxor, request a room in the pyramid, as I cannot imagine the new rooms will be able to compete!
