Back in the 1940's when the Flamingo opened it was by far the most impressive of the fledgling casinos that were springing up on the strip. Although none of that original casino still exists, the Flamingo Las Vegas (as it is now known - it seems to have changed hands more frequently than you or I have had hot dinners) is still a dramatic sight on Las Vegas Boulevard, although admittedly, the best views of the Flamingo are available after dark, when the entire front lights up in, obviously, pink.
The Flamingo has been part of the Hilton chain for a long time, and although no longer so, it's parent company Park Place Entertainment was created by being spun-off from the Hilton chain. Park Place also owned the Las Vegas Hilton until that was sold on again (for a mere $365 million - a bargain compared with building a new resort) in July 2000!!

Park Place also own a number of other Las Vegas casinos: Ballys, Paris and as from December 30th 1999 Caesars Palace. Las Vegas seems to be going through a phase of consolidation in the casino operators area. Three groups now control the bulk of the mega-resorts: Mandalay Resort Group - who own Circus Circus, Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay (and also have a 50% share in Monte Carlo. The other half of Monte Carlo is owned by MGM Mirage. MGM also happen to own MGM Grand (funny that!) and New York, New York, Bellagio, Treasure Island, Mirage and (bizarrely) Boardwalk. Whew! Does that leave anything not owned by these three?

The Flamingo is one of the older casinos that has continuously developed, extended and modernised. Although the frontage and casino are showing signs of age (the casino feels deeply stuck in the 1980's) the resort has just added a new, art deco-style, time-share building that overlooks the fantastic pool area.
The pool area is one of Las Vegas' hidden treasures. Featuring pink flamingos, turtles and even a penguin pool the pool area is a real oasis in the Las Vegas dessert. Somehow even the hotel towers (which look somewhat out of place from the strip) fit perfectly, and the view from the rooms must be superb!
